Mark Hutchinson - Tribute
For my first job, I was a dancer on Lena's first t.v. series. It was a very exciting time, and it was easy to forget, that Lena was so young, because she was so professional, learning the script, songs and choreography. She was amazingly in charge, completely natural and without nerves.
After the series, Dougie Squires, the choreographer, asked Antony Johns and myself to do Lena's summer season in Bridlington, as part of his second generation dance group.
We all had a wonderful summer, and Lena spent a lot of time with chilling out with us. Every night, I would stand in the wings and watch her sing "It's not the spotlight", and I would marvel that this incredibly emotional and strong voice could come from someone so young. She was only 15, but her voice had an amazing depth and maturity.
Over the years, we kept in touch, and she would come to see me in Me and my girl and Mr. Cinders. We would talk honestly and openly, and I would try and help as a friend, but Lena was incredibly private, and just so full of sadness, that she wouldn't let people get too close.
But I choose to remember the happy, smiling, warm and kind Lena, shining on and off-stage. She was a gentle lost soul, a wonderful and underrated talent. We miss you Lena.
